Train Tracking 2026: 5 Ways to Find Where Your Train Is Now

Train Tracking 2026: 5 Ways to Find Where Your Train Is Now

Train tracking in Bangladesh is easy once you know which tools really work. The official way is a short SMS: type TR, a space and the train number, then send it to 16318. You can also call the railway hotline 131 or ask at the station.

This guide goes much deeper than a one-line tip. You will learn how to read the reply, how to work out the real delay, what to do when no reply comes, and which apps are safe to use. We also list 20 popular intercity train numbers, so you never send the wrong one. Every fact was checked again in October 2026.

Quick answer: For train tracking in Bangladesh, type TR, a space and the train number, for example TR 702, and send it to 16318. The reply shows where the train was last reported, the next station, the distance and the delay. You can also call 131. The Rail Sheba app sells tickets but does not show a live map.

Train Tracking in Bangladesh: Every Option at a Glance

Bangladesh Railway does not run a public live map for passengers. Its own passenger tool for train tracking is still the SMS service. The table below compares every option we could verify, from the official SMS to private apps.

For most passengers, the SMS is the quickest choice. The other options help when the SMS fails, or when you want a second opinion before you leave home.

How Train Tracking by SMS Works (TR to 16318)

Bangladesh Railway runs a Train Tracking and Monitoring System, or TTMS. GPS devices on the engines send their position over the mobile network. Control rooms can see each train’s location, speed and distance from the nearest station. The SMS service simply shares part of that data with you.

The passenger service started in 2014. News reports at the time said it worked on Grameenphone, Robi and Banglalink, and that tracking devices were fitted on about 50 engines at first. The railway’s own website, railway.gov.bd, still lists the TTMS among its services.

Step-by-step: send a train tracking SMS

  1. Open the messages app on your phone.
  2. Type the letters TR.
  3. Add one space.
  4. Type the train number, for example 702.
  5. Send the message to 16318.
  6. Wait for the reply and check the time shown in it.

The railway’s own guide shows the letters in small type (“tr 705”). It also accepts a train name after TR, such as “tr Ekota”. Use the number when you can. Names can be spelled in many ways, and one name covers trains running in both directions.

Three ready examples

  • TR 702: Subarna Express from Dhaka to Chattogram (Chittagong)
  • TR 709: Parabat Express from Dhaka to Sylhet
  • TR 814: Cox’s Bazar Express from Dhaka to Cox’s Bazar

How to Read the Live Train Status Reply

The reply is short, but it packs in a lot. According to the railway’s TTMS guide, a reply can include the train’s current position, the next station and its distance, the next stop, the delay and the time of the report. The railway’s sample reply shows a line like “Next Stn: Bagzana, 4.9km”.

Live train status reply guide showing report time, position, next station and delay

Read each live train status reply in this order:

  1. Time of the report. This matters most. If the time is old, the train has moved since then.
  2. Current position. This is the station or section where the train was last seen.
  3. Next station and distance. This shows how close the train is to its next stop.
  4. Delay. This is how far behind the timetable the train is running.

A simple way to estimate your wait

Take the scheduled arrival time at your station and add the delay from the reply. Then add a safety buffer of 10 to 15 minutes, because delays can grow at crossings and busy junctions. Trains in Bangladesh often run 30 to 90 minutes late, so this small sum can save you a long wait on the platform.

Check again every 20 to 30 minutes as the train gets closer. One reply is a snapshot, not a promise. Two or three replies show you whether the train is gaining time or losing it.

Why the delay can change

  • Most lines are single track, so trains wait at stations to let others pass.
  • Late-running trains can lose their path and fall further behind.
  • Night trains sometimes recover time when the line is quiet.
  • During Eid, extra trains share the same tracks and delays often grow.

Train Numbers for Train Tracking: 20 Popular Intercity Trains

Every intercity train has two numbers, one for each direction. The number is printed on your ticket. Send the number for your direction, or you will get the train coming the other way.

Common Train Tracking SMS Errors and Fixes

Most failed messages come from a few small mistakes. Here is what usually goes wrong and how to fix it.

  • No reply at all. Check your balance first, because the service charges a small fee. Some bundle SMS packs may not cover short codes. Wait a few minutes, then send once more.
  • Reply about the wrong train. You probably sent the number for the other direction. Check the number on your ticket.
  • Format not accepted. Leave exactly one space between TR and the number. Do not add a dash, a dot or the word “Express”.
  • Letter O instead of zero. In numbers like 701, type the digit 0, not the letter O.
  • Old time in the reply. The engine’s device may not have reported for a while, often in areas with a weak mobile signal. Try again after 10 minutes.
  • Your operator does not respond. The service was launched on Grameenphone, Robi and Banglalink. If you use another SIM, test it a day before you travel.
  • Local or commuter trains. Some smaller trains may not have a tracking device, so the system has no position to share.

If the SMS still fails, move to the next option: call 131 or ask at the station enquiry counter.

Rail Sheba App, Website and Hotline: Train Tracking Help Compared

Many people expect the official app or website to show a moving train on a map. Here is what each official channel can and cannot do in October 2026.

Rail Sheba app

The Rail Sheba app is the official Bangladesh Railway app for buying tickets. Its Google Play listing, last updated in September 2025, covers searching trains, choosing seats, paying online and downloading e-tickets. It does not list train tracking or a live map. Our Rail Sheba app guide explains its booking features in full.

Official railway website

The railway website has a page for the Train Tracking and Monitoring System, but it holds a document about the system, not a live map. Its notice bar asks passengers to call 131 for service information. Online tickets are sold only on the official e-ticket website and in the app.

Hotline 131

Call 131 and give the train name and number. The operator can tell you the latest reported position or delay. Lines get busy at Eid and during bad weather, so try the SMS first when you are in a hurry.

Station enquiry counter

If you are already at the station, ask at the enquiry counter or the station master’s office. Staff there get updates from the control room. Also listen to the announcements, because platform changes are often made at the last minute.

Third-Party Train Location Apps: Use With Care

A few private apps now try to show the train location on a map. None of them is run by Bangladesh Railway, so treat their data as a helpful extra, not an official answer.

Train location apps safety tips for Bangladesh Railway passengers with fake app warnings
  • TrainKothai. An independent tracker launched in 2026 by a Bangladeshi developer. Passengers on a train can choose to share their GPS, and the app checks that the movement looks like a real train. When nobody is sharing, it shows the timetable position and labels it as scheduled. Busy routes have better coverage than quiet ones.
  • BR Explorer. A private app by Suncrops Ltd. with a “Locate Train” menu that opens the train location on a map. A 2024 guide said new users get a few free checks and must then buy points with money.

Safety rules for any tracking app

  • Only Rail Sheba is listed under the developer name “Bangladesh Railway”. Any other app is private.
  • Never share your NID number, password or OTP with a tracking app. Tracking does not need them.
  • Never pay an unknown seller who promises “confirmed seats” along with tracking. Bangladesh Railway warned in 2025 about fake ticket sellers on social media.
  • Check the reviews, the developer name and the requested permissions before you install.

Can Google Maps Show Train Location in Bangladesh?

No, not in a reliable way. Bangladesh Railway does not publish an open live data feed, so map apps have nothing official to show. Even the maker of TrainKothai says he had to build his own dataset of trains and stations because no usable public data existed.

Google Maps is still useful on travel day. Use it to check road traffic to the station, then compare that time with your SMS reply. If the train is running 60 minutes late and the road takes 40 minutes, you know when to leave home.

Smart Train Tracking Tips for Travel Day

  • Start early. Send your first SMS about two hours before departure if your train starts from another city.
  • Track the incoming train. Many trains make a return trip soon after they arrive. For example, Parabat Express 709 reaches Sylhet in the early afternoon, and 710 leaves Sylhet for Dhaka a few hours later. If the incoming train is very late, the return trip may start late too.
  • Track for family pickups. Ask the traveller to send you the train number. You can then check the live train status yourself instead of calling them again and again.
  • Screenshot the reply. Keep it handy if you need to show a guard or a family member.
  • Do not skip the platform. A delayed train can make up time. Reach the station at least 30 minutes before the estimated arrival.
  • Night trains. Set an alarm 30 minutes before your stop and check the train location by SMS, because stations are hard to see in the dark.
  • Eid trips. Expect bigger delays and busier hotlines. Check more often.

Waiting at a middle station

If you board at a junction such as Bhairab, Akhaura, Ishwardi or Joydebpur, your train has already travelled a long way. Small delays add up along the route. Start checking when the train leaves its first big stop, then check again when it is two or three stations away from you.

The reply names the next station, so keep a list of the stations before yours. When that list shows the train is one stop away, walk to the platform and find your coach number on the ticket.

International trains

The Maitree, Bandhan and Mitali Express trains to India have been suspended since July 2024. Do not rely on tracking replies or social media posts about them. Wait for an official railway notice before you plan a cross-border trip.

Train Tracking Costs: What You Will Pay

Train tracking costs very little. When the SMS service began in 2014, Robi charged Tk 4 per SMS plus VAT, and news reports gave a figure of about Tk 4.60 including VAT. Operators can change their fees, so check your balance after the first message. The station enquiry is free, and the hotline costs whatever your operator charges for the call.

Crowd-sourced apps are free to view, according to their makers. Paid apps may sell points or credits. There is no need to pay for tracking when the official SMS gives the same core facts for a few taka.

FAQs about Train Tracking in Bangladesh

How do I do train tracking by SMS in Bangladesh?

Type TR, a space and the train number, for example TR 709, and send it to 16318. The reply shows the train’s last reported position, the next station, the distance and the delay.

Does the Rail Sheba app show live train status?

No. The Rail Sheba app is for buying tickets, choosing seats and downloading e-tickets. Its store listing does not include tracking. Use the SMS service or call 131 for live train status.

Why did my train tracking SMS get no reply?

The most common reasons are low balance, a wrong format or an unsupported SIM. Make sure there is one space after TR and use digits only. If it still fails, call 131.

Can I see the train location on Google Maps?

Not reliably. Bangladesh Railway does not share a public live feed with map apps. Use Google Maps to plan your road trip to the station instead.

Which number should I send?

Send the number printed on your ticket. Each direction has its own number. For example, Subarna Express is 702 from Dhaka and 701 towards Dhaka.

Is live train tracking free?

The SMS has a small fee per message set by your operator. Asking at the station is free. Some private apps charge for points, so read the terms before paying.

Final Words on Train Tracking

Train tracking in Bangladesh still works best with one simple SMS. Save 16318 in your phone, copy your train number from your ticket, and check two or three times before you leave. Use 131 or the station counter as backups, and treat private apps as an extra view only.
