No. All three passenger trains between Bangladesh and India are still suspended. The Maitree Express stopped on 16 July 2024, during the July uprising. The suspension of all three trains was announced from 19 July 2024. Freight trains have kept running across the border.

Timeline of the restart talks
- March 2020: Services stopped for Covid-19.
- 29 May 2022: Maitree and Bandhan came back. Mitali started on 1 June 2022.
- July 2024: All three were suspended again.
- 8 September 2026: Railway officials of both countries met in Dhaka. Bangladesh’s railway minister said both sides were positive. India’s High Commissioner said he hoped to give a fixed date “very soon”.
- 9 October 2026: Bangladesh Railway said no decision had been made. It was still waiting for a formal proposal from India.
Some media reports in September 2026 said the trains could return in October 2026. That had not happened by late October 2026. Do not trust social media posts that sell “Maitree tickets”. Wait for an official notice on the Bangladesh Railway website. Until then, any Dhaka to Kolkata train ticket price you see online is an old figure from 2024 or earlier.

What was included in the fare
The taka fares appear to have been all-in prices. When the Mitali Express started in 2022, its AC Berth fare of Tk 4,905 was made up of a US$44 base fare, 15% VAT and a Tk 500 travel tax. The land-route travel tax then rose from Tk 500 to Tk 1,000 on 1 July 2023. Bangladesh Railway named the dollar rate and the higher travel tax as reasons for its 2023 fare rises.
Child fares and Indian rupee prices
Reports from 2022 said children under five paid half the fare. Tickets bought in Kolkata were charged in Indian rupees, also linked to the dollar. We could not confirm the last rupee fares from an official source, so we do not quote them here.

Maitree Express Ticket Price by Class
Within the Dhaka to Kolkata train ticket price, the class you chose made the biggest difference. The Maitree Express ticket price depended on just two classes. There was no Shovan, Snigdha or non-AC class on this train. Bangladesh Railway’s fare notices called the first-class cabin “AC Seat”.
- AC Seat (Tk 5,110): First-class AC cabins with berths. Best for families, older travellers and anyone who wants a quieter ride.
- AC Chair (Tk 3,740): Open AC coaches with reclining chairs. Best for solo travellers on a budget.
The gap between the two was Tk 1,370 per person. For a family of four, the cabin cost about Tk 5,480 more in total, but it gave privacy and space to rest.

The old route ran 392 km from Dhaka Cantonment via Tangail, the Jamuna Bridge, Ishwardi and Darsana, then crossed to Gede in India. Officials put the running time at about 7 hours 45 minutes. With the timetable and border stop, a trip took about 8 to 9 hours, plus check-in time.
In the other direction, the Kolkata to Dhaka train left Chitpur early in the morning and reached Dhaka Cantonment in the late afternoon. It needed no stop for immigration at the border. Since November 2017, passport checks and customs were done at Dhaka Cantonment and Kolkata (Chitpur) instead. This saved hours compared with the old system.
Bandhan Express: Khulna to Kolkata Fares and Timetable
The Bandhan Express was the short and cheap link. It ran 172 km from Khulna via Jashore (Jessore), Benapole and Petrapole to Kolkata. The last fares were Tk 3,055 for an AC Seat and Tk 2,370 for an AC Chair.
- From Kolkata: 7:10 AM (IST) on Sundays and Thursdays, reaching Khulna at 12:30 PM.
- From Khulna: 1:30 PM on the same days, reaching Kolkata at 6:10 PM (IST).
- Journey time: About 5 hours 20 minutes.
- Jashore stop: From March 2019 it stopped at Jashore for 3 minutes, with 200 seats kept for Jashore passengers.

Mitali Express: Dhaka to New Jalpaiguri Fares and Timetable
The Mitali Express linked Dhaka with New Jalpaiguri, the main station for Siliguri and Darjeeling. It started on 1 June 2022 and ran through Chilahati in Bangladesh and Haldibari in India. Its last fares were Tk 7,025 for an AC Berth, Tk 4,520 for an AC Seat and Tk 4,015 for an AC Chair.
- From Dhaka Cantonment: 9:50 PM on Mondays and Thursdays, reaching New Jalpaiguri at 7:15 AM (IST) the next day.
- From New Jalpaiguri: 11:45 AM (IST) on Sundays and Wednesdays, reaching Dhaka at 10:30 PM.
- Journey time: About 10 hours.
This was an overnight train from Dhaka, so the AC Berth was the comfortable choice if you wanted to sleep.
Where Tickets Were Sold and the Rules You Must Follow
Knowing the Dhaka to Kolkata train ticket price was only half the job. You also needed the right papers and a trip to the counter. International tickets were never sold on the e-ticket website or in the app. The Rail Sheba app only sells domestic tickets. You had to buy in person.

Option 1: Bus through Benapole–Petrapole
Air-conditioned coaches have long run from Dhaka to Kolkata through the Benapole–Petrapole border. Older travel guides put the trip at 8 to 9 hours, and border queues can add more. Operators, timings and fares change with visa demand, so confirm with the bus company before you pay.
Option 2: Domestic train plus a walk across the border
Take a train from Dhaka to Jashore or Khulna, then go by road to Benapole. Cross on foot to Petrapole, and continue to Kolkata by road or by local train from Bangaon to Sealdah. Pay the land-route travel tax at Benapole. It was raised to Tk 1,000 in July 2023.
Option 3: Flight
Flights between Dhaka and Kolkata are the fastest choice. Remember the visa rule: if you fly into India, you cannot come back by train or road. Choose your route carefully before you book.

- Follow only official notices from Bangladesh Railway. The first trips will sell out fast.
