These figures come from the government fare policy of September 2022, DMTCL notices and national news reports. The basic fare has stayed the same since the metro opened in December 2022.
One short rule to remember: the further you ride, the more you pay, up to Tk 100. The full metro rail fare chart and real examples are below.
How the Metro Rail Ticket Price Is Worked Out
The government fixed the metro fare at Tk 5 per kilometre in September 2022. It also set a minimum fare of Tk 20. So even a very short hop, such as Mirpur 10 to Kazipara, costs Tk 20.
In the official list, fares move up in steps of Tk 10. That is why two nearby stations often share the same price. For example, from Uttara North, both Pallabi and Mirpur 11 cost Tk 30.
There are no seat classes on the metro. Every passenger pays the same metro rail ticket price for the same trip, whether you sit or stand. The fare is also the same in both directions. Uttara North to Motijheel costs Tk 100, and Motijheel to Uttara North also costs Tk 100.
The fare is taken when you leave the station. If your pass balance is too low at the exit gate, you can top up at the customer service counter near the gates.
Metro Rail Fare Chart From Uttara North
Uttara North is the starting point for many riders. This metro rail fare chart shows the price from Uttara North to all 15 other stations. The pass column is our calculation of the 10% saving.

| To station | Single ticket | With Rapid or MRT Pass |
|---|---|---|
| Uttara Center | Tk 20 | Tk 18 |
| Uttara South | Tk 20 | Tk 18 |
| Pallabi | Tk 30 | Tk 27 |
| Mirpur 11 | Tk 30 | Tk 27 |
| Mirpur 10 | Tk 40 | Tk 36 |
| Kazipara | Tk 40 | Tk 36 |
| Shewrapara | Tk 50 | Tk 45 |
| Agargaon | Tk 60 | Tk 54 |
| Bijoy Sarani | Tk 60 | Tk 54 |
| Farmgate | Tk 70 | Tk 63 |
| Karwan Bazar | Tk 80 | Tk 72 |
| Shahbagh | Tk 80 | Tk 72 |
| Dhaka University | Tk 90 | Tk 81 |
| Bangladesh Secretariat | Tk 90 | Tk 81 |
| Motijheel | Tk 100 | Tk 90 |
The same metro rail fare chart works in reverse. For example, Agargaon to Uttara North is also Tk 60. The card reader at the exit gate deducts the exact amount from your pass balance.
How to read the metro rail fare chart
Find your starting station, then look for your destination in the list. The first price is the single-journey metro rail ticket price. The second price is what a Rapid Pass or MRT Pass user pays. If you start at a middle station, use the popular trips table in the next section or the fare board at your station.
Same price, different stop
Look closely and you will see pairs of stations with the same fare. Agargaon and Bijoy Sarani both cost Tk 60. Karwan Bazar and Shahbagh both cost Tk 80. Dhaka University and the Secretariat both cost Tk 90. If your office sits between two such stations, choose the one closer to your door. It costs nothing extra.

Not everyone starts at Uttara North. This second metro rail fare chart covers popular trips from Uttara Center, Mirpur 10 and Agargaon, as listed when the Motijheel section opened.

For any trip not shown here, check the fare board near the ticket counter. The vending machine screen also shows the metro rail ticket price after you pick your destination, before you pay.
Single Ticket, Rapid Pass or MRT Pass?
There are three ways to pay for a metro ride. Each one suits a different type of rider.

| Ticket type | Cost | Discount | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single-journey ticket | Fare only (Tk 20 to Tk 100) | None, except 25% for eligible seniors and persons with disabilities | Visitors and occasional riders |
| Rapid Pass | Tk 400 (Tk 200 deposit plus Tk 200 balance) | 10% on every trip | Daily commuters |
| MRT Pass | No longer sold; old cards still work | 10% on every trip | People who already have one |
Single-journey ticket
A single-journey ticket is a plastic card for one trip. You buy it at the station, tap it at the entry gate and drop it into the exit gate slot at your destination. The gate keeps the card. Use it on the same day you buy it.
Please do not take the card home. By late 2024, passengers had taken away about 200,000 single-journey cards, and the shortage led to long queues at stations.
Rapid Pass
The Rapid Pass is a stored-value card issued by the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA). It works on the metro and on some bus services in Dhaka. The card has no expiry date while it works. DMTCL now sells the Rapid Pass at metro stations in place of its own MRT Pass.
MRT Pass
DMTCL stopped issuing new MRT Passes because it ran out of stock. If you already have one, you can keep using and recharging it. Officials say the balance on an old or damaged MRT Pass can be moved to a Rapid Pass.
Is a pass worth it?
Say you ride Mirpur 10 to Motijheel and back every working day. With single tickets, you pay Tk 120 a day. With a pass, you pay Tk 108. Over 22 working days, that is a saving of about Tk 264 a month, which is more than the Tk 200 deposit. You also skip the single-ticket queue, which matters more than the metro rail ticket price on a busy morning.
How to Buy a Metro Ticket Step by Step
Buying a metro ticket is quick once you know the steps. Ticket counters and vending machines are on the concourse level, one floor below the platform.
- Enter the station and go up to the concourse (ticket) level.
- Go to a ticket counter or a ticket vending machine (TVM).
- Choose your destination station. The screen or the counter staff will tell you the metro rail ticket price.
- Pay the fare in cash and collect your single-journey card.
- Tap the card on the entry gate reader and walk through.
- Take the correct platform for your direction: towards Motijheel or towards Uttara North.
- At your destination, insert the card into the exit gate slot. The gate opens and keeps the card.
Carry small notes. At rush hour, queues move faster when you have the exact fare ready.
How to get and recharge a Rapid Pass
- Go to the Rapid Pass counter at a metro station.
- Pay Tk 400. Of this, Tk 200 is a refundable deposit and Tk 200 is your starting balance.
- Register the card on the Rapid Pass website or app. Registration is optional, but only registered cards can get a refund or a replacement. It can take up to three working days.
- Recharge at station ticket machines or counters, or at selected Dutch-Bangla Bank branches. The minimum top-up is Tk 100.
- Tap in and tap out at the gates. The fare is deducted when you leave.
You can read the full card rules on the official Rapid Pass guidelines page. One person can hold up to five active cards.
Monthly Cost: Metro Rail Ticket Price for Daily Commuters
A single fare looks small, but daily trips add up. This table shows what a return trip every working day costs over 22 days. We worked it out from the metro rail ticket price for each trip.
| Daily return trip | Single tickets (22 days) | With pass (22 days) |
|---|---|---|
| Uttara North to Motijheel | Tk 4,400 | Tk 3,960 |
| Uttara North to Agargaon | Tk 2,640 | Tk 2,376 |
| Mirpur 10 to Motijheel | Tk 2,640 | Tk 2,376 |
| Agargaon to Motijheel | Tk 2,200 | Tk 1,980 |
| Mirpur 10 to Farmgate | Tk 1,320 | Tk 1,188 |
A full-line commuter from Uttara North saves Tk 440 a month with a pass. That is more than the whole Tk 400 cost of a new Rapid Pass card.
Is the Dhaka metro expensive?
When the fare was fixed in 2022, newspapers compared it with other cities. The Daily Star reported that Dhaka’s minimum fare was about twice Delhi’s, three times Kolkata’s and two and a half times Lahore’s. Still, for many riders the time saved in traffic makes the metro rail ticket price good value.
Discounts and Free Travel on the Metro
From 25 May 2026, two groups pay a lower metro rail ticket price. The government launched this discount at Farmgate metro station.

- Senior citizens aged 65 or older: 25% off single-journey tickets. Show your NID card.
- Persons with disabilities and special needs: 25% off single-journey tickets, up from 15% before. Show your Subarna identity card from the Ministry of Social Welfare.
- War-wounded freedom fighters: Free single-trip tickets.
The discounted metro rail ticket price is for the passenger only and cannot be shared. Only one discounted ticket is issued per NID at a time. Eligible passengers also get priority at the counter.
| Normal fare | With 25% discount |
|---|---|
| Tk 20 | Tk 15 |
| Tk 40 | Tk 30 |
| Tk 60 | Tk 45 |
| Tk 80 | Tk 60 |
| Tk 100 | Tk 75 |
What about students? In May 2026, the transport minister said a 25% student discount would come after Eid-ul-Azha. The way to check student status was still being worked out. We could not confirm that it has started, so ask at your station.
VAT: Will the Metro Rail Ticket Price Go Up?
Metro tickets fall under the 15% VAT rule. However, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) has waived it again and again. The waiver ran until 31 December 2025, and a December 2025 order extended it to 30 June 2026.
In April 2026, reports said the waiver would continue for the next fiscal year. DMTCL has asked for a 10-year waiver, until June 2036. If VAT were ever charged, a Tk 100 trip would cost Tk 115.
As of October 2026, we found no news of a fare hike. The metro rail ticket price is still Tk 20 to Tk 100.
Money-Saving Tips for Metro Riders
Small choices can cut your monthly travel cost. Here are tips that most fare guides miss.
- Use a pass for daily trips: The 10% saving adds up fast, and you avoid queues.
- Use same-price stations: Check the metro rail fare chart for stations that cost the same, and pick the one nearest your destination.
- Keep your card flat: Bent, cut or damaged cards can be blocked. Replacing a damaged Rapid Pass costs Tk 200.
- Register your Rapid Pass: If you lose a registered card, the balance moves to the new card. A replacement costs Tk 400 (Tk 200 deposit plus Tk 200 fee).
- Get your deposit back: A registered Rapid Pass can be returned for its deposit and balance, minus a Tk 20 fee.
- Check your balance before a long trip: Make sure your pass has enough balance for the fare.
Metro Tickets vs Bangladesh Railway Tickets
Metro tickets and train tickets are completely separate. Metro tickets are sold only at metro stations. You cannot buy them in the Rail Sheba app or on the railway e-ticket website.
Intercity train tickets work differently. They are sold online up to 10 days ahead, with a Tk 20 online charge per seat. Our Bangladesh Railway ticket guide explains seat classes and booking.
Many riders use both. Motijheel metro station is less than 1 km from Kamalapur railway station. If you go on to Narayanganj by commuter train, check our Narayanganj to Dhaka train schedule for times. More details on the line are on the MRT Line 6 Wikipedia page.
