The line runs above the road on a concrete viaduct for its whole length. You climb from the street to the concourse level to buy a ticket, then go up again to the platform.
How the metro rail route was built
The line was built in two main phases. Phase one covered 11.73 km from Uttara North to Agargaon with nine stations. It opened on 29 December 2022, but at first trains stopped only at the two ends. The other stations opened one by one between January and March 2023.
Phase two added 8.37 km from Agargaon to Motijheel. Farmgate, Bangladesh Secretariat and Motijheel opened first, on 5 November 2023. Bijoy Sarani and Dhaka University followed on 13 December, and Karwan Bazar and Shahbagh on 31 December 2023. That completed the 16-station metro rail station list we use today.
The design also changed along the way. The line near Dhaka University was first planned to pass beside the Shaheed Minar. It was later moved to run in front of the TSC instead. The project cost estimate rose from about Tk 22,000 crore in 2011 to about Tk 33,472 crore, which includes the Kamalapur extension.

Metro Rail Route Through Uttara (Stations 1 to 3)
The metro rail route begins at Uttara North, at Diabari Bottola on Ahmed Sofa Sarani in Sector 15. The Diabari depot, where trains are cleaned and checked, is nearby. A BRTC shuttle bus runs from this station to House Building.
From here, the line runs south along Ahmed Sofa Sarani to Uttara Center and Uttara South, both in Sector 17. Uttara South sits at the Metro Circle. The Diabari lake area, a spot popular with nature lovers, lies between Uttara North and Uttara Center.
Which Uttara stop should you use? These are the first three names on the metro rail station list, and all are close together. Uttara South is the least used station on the line, so its ticket queue may be shorter.
Note that these three stations are on the western side of Uttara. They are not on the Airport Road, so allow time to reach them from the eastern sectors.
Metro Rail Route Through Mirpur (Stations 4 to 8)
After Uttara South, the line turns into Mirpur. Pallabi is the first Mirpur stop. Then come Mirpur 11 and Mirpur 10, two of the busiest areas of the city.
Mirpur 10 is the most used station on the whole line. A DMTCL survey in 2025 counted about 17.8 million trips there. The Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium is about a 15-minute walk away, and the National Zoo and Botanical Garden are a short ride from here. Mirpur 10 will also be an interchange with the planned MRT Line-5 North.
The line then passes Kazipara and Shewrapara. These stations are very close together. Mirpur 10 to Kazipara is less than 1 km, so some riders simply walk between nearby stops.
Metro Rail Route Through Central Dhaka (Stations 9 to 12)
Agargaon was the southern end of the line until November 2023. Many government offices are in this area. The Bangladesh Air Force Museum is right beside the station.
Next is Bijoy Sarani. The Bangladesh Military Museum, the 3D Art Gallery and the Novo Theatre are a short walk from here, which makes it a good stop for families on a day out.
Farmgate station is on Farmhouse Road, in one of the busiest junctions in Dhaka. Tejgaon railway station is about 1 km east of it. Karwan Bazar comes next. Bashundhara City shopping complex is a few minutes’ walk away. Karwan Bazar will also be an interchange with the planned MRT Line-5 South.
Metro Rail Route From Shahbagh to Motijheel (Stations 13 to 16)
The last part of the metro rail route passes some of the most famous places in Dhaka. Shahbagh station is a short walk from the National Museum of Bangladesh.
Dhaka University station stands next to the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC), which is why many people call it TSC station. Curzon Hall, the Shaheed Minar, Suhrawardy Udyan and the Ekushey Book Fair grounds are all within walking distance.
Bangladesh Secretariat station is in Segunbagicha, near the Secretariat and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The line ends at Motijheel station, on Motijheel Road in Dilkusha, in the heart of the commercial district. Kamalapur railway station is less than 1 km away.

Metro Rail Route and Railway Station Connections
The metro does not yet share a station with Bangladesh Railway. Still, three railway stations are close to the metro rail route.

- Kamalapur (Dhaka railway station): Less than 1 km from Motijheel metro station. Walk or take a rickshaw. Commuter trains from Narayanganj end here. See our Narayanganj to Dhaka train schedule for times.
- Tejgaon: About 1 km east of Farmgate metro station and about 1 km north of Karwan Bazar station. Some trains on the Dhaka to Narayanganj line stop here.
- Airport railway station: On Airport Road, opposite Shahjalal Airport. It is about 4 to 5 km from the Uttara metro stations, so take a bus, CNG or ride-share. Trains from Gazipur stop here, as our Joydebpur to Dhaka train schedule shows.
Example: Narayanganj to Mirpur 10
Here is how a mixed trip works. Take a commuter train from Narayanganj to Kamalapur. Walk or take a rickshaw for under 1 km to Motijheel metro station. Then ride 10 stops north to Mirpur 10 for Tk 60. You avoid the worst of the road traffic for most of the journey.
Intercity train tickets are sold on the official Bangladesh Railway e-ticket website and the Rail Sheba app. Metro tickets are sold only at metro stations. Our Bangladesh Railway ticket guide explains train booking step by step.
Kamalapur Extension and Future Metro Rail Route Plans
The metro rail route will soon grow by one station. A 1.16 km viaduct is being built from Motijheel to a new Kamalapur metro station beside Kamalapur railway station. This will make the line about 21.26 km long with 17 stations.
In September 2026, officials said civil work was 82.28% done and electro-mechanical work was 53% done. They expected the work to finish by 31 December 2026.
Once it opens, train passengers at Kamalapur will no longer need the walk to Motijheel. Officials expect daily ridership to rise to about 677,000 after the extension. Reports in mid-2026 said passenger service should start in March or April 2027, after night-time trial runs. You can follow the project on the Kamalapur metro station Wikipedia page.
Kamalapur is planned as a big interchange. MRT Line-1, the underground airport line, and other future lines are planned to meet there. Line-1 is still under construction, and reports say it is unlikely to open before 2030.
In the north, there is a plan to extend Line-6 about 7.5 km from Uttara North to Tongi. No opening date has been set. If it is built, the full line would be about 28.76 km long.
Busiest Stations and Platform Tips
Knowing how each station works saves time. Some stations have one central platform, while others have two side platforms.
- Island platform (one shared platform): Agargaon, Farmgate, Karwan Bazar, Shahbagh and Bangladesh Secretariat. Trains in both directions stop on either side of the same platform. Check the sign for “Motijheel” or “Uttara North” before you board.
- Side platforms (one for each direction): All other stations. Choose the correct staircase or lift on the concourse, because you cannot cross over at platform level.
Mirpur 10 is the busiest station, and Uttara South is the least used, with about 1.2 million trips in the 2025 survey. If you live between two stops, a quieter station can mean a shorter ticket queue and an easier walk to the train.
Tips for Using the Metro Rail Route
The metro rail route serves very different riders. Students use Dhaka University and Shahbagh. Office workers crowd Agargaon, Karwan Bazar and Motijheel. Families heading to museums use Agargaon, Bijoy Sarani and Shahbagh. Whoever you are, these habits make the trip easier.
- Learn your direction: Trains are signed by their last stop, Motijheel or Uttara North. Going south? Take the Motijheel train.
- Count your stops: Keep the metro rail station list on your phone. Station names are announced on board, but it helps to know what comes before yours.
- Use the right exit: Check the exit signs on the concourse so you come down on the correct side of the road.
- Plan rail connections with a buffer: Allow at least an hour between the metro and a long-distance train at Kamalapur.
- Carry a Rapid Pass: It saves 10% on every trip and lets you skip the ticket queue.
- Follow station rules: Eating is not allowed on trains, platforms or concourses. Keep your bag in front of you when the train is crowded.
